Have you ever had to spend hours reading through a lengthy document just to look for one key word or section?
I recently had to look for a reference to share buy-backs in a company constitution. To read through the entire constitution, making sure I didn't miss anything, would normally have taken me 30 minutes or so.
Our office is a paperless office and the document had been scanned and saved on the computer as a PDF document. Usually this allows you to do a search easily but, as the constitution was quite old, the format could not be searched.
However, using the Paperport software program, I converted the scanned document into a Word document (OCR) and found what I was looking for in a few seconds!
There are no doubt many other products that can fulfil a similar function - it is more a matter of remembering that the possibility exists.
