ATO Warning: Tax Scam
The Tax Office has issued warnings with regards to a recent new scam targeting taxpayers. The fraudsters initiate a fake three-way conversation with themselves, a taxpayer and someone impersonating a tax agent.
The scammers often suggest:
- There is an outstanding debt stemming from the taxpayer and from this continues to inform that the taxpayer is at risk of being arrested if they do not pay back the fake tax debt
- A tax refund is to be issued to the taxpayer
In both examples, the fraudsters will request bank details of the taxpayer and should the taxpayer issue those details, the scam begins. The ATO wishes to remind taxpayers a to remain vigilant of any suspicious activity as illustrated.
