MyGov Correspondence Warning
MyGov is an online account where you can access a range of Australian Government services with one user name and password. Via your account you can update your personal details and receive messages, statements and important information. You can read more about it on our innovations page or the MyGov website.
Overells is a paperless office and we usually advocate advances like this, which aim to make things much easier for people and reduce the amount of paper used. However, in this case we would like to issue a warning as well. If you have signed up to MyGov account with the ATO then they will not send correspondence to your tax agent if they can send it to you via your online account. This means, for example, that income tax assessments bypass us, even though we have lodged the return!
We have systems in place to monitor anything which is sent to MyGov however this is not ideal. There is a lot of discussion in the accounting world at the moment about the ATO's approach with this correspondence but until they improve their methods we have to do what we can to work around them. If you receive anything via MyGov that you feel we should be aware of, please contact us.
